TN RTE Enrollment of Students in Private Schools: 130,000 Applicants Received in 2025-26

This year, a total of 130,000 applicants have applied for admission to private schools. According to the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 25% of the seats in private schools are reserved for economically disadvantaged children, resulting in approximately 80,000 such reserved seats across 7,233 private schools in the state. Under this initiative, students from LKG or 1st grade can receive free education up to 8th grade. In Tamil Nadu, since the implementation of the RTE scheme in 2013, 4.60 lakh children have been studying in private schools under this provision.

In line with this, the online application process for free student enrollment for the upcoming academic year (2025-26) commenced on April 22 and ran until May 20. Around 130,000 applicants have already submitted their applications this year.

Furthermore, applications will undergo scrutiny to allocate seats to eligible candidates. If more applications are received than the available designated seats, a lottery system will be conducted on May 28 to select students for admission over a transparent process.

TN RTE Private Unaided School Admission 2025-26 Lottery Draw Result

In Tamil Nadu, for the academic year 2025-26, the enrollment of students seeking admission under the Right to Education (RTE) Act’s 25% reservation in private schools will not involve a lottery process.

Nonetheless, the demand for these reserved seats remains robust, as private schools receive a plethora of applications for Class 1 or LKG from children belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Disadvantaged Group (DG) categories. To tackle this situation equitably, a Draw of Lots mechanism will be implemented to select students for RTE 25 admissions fairly.

To streamline the lottery process, every school will establish a committee tasked with overseeing the event within the school premises, with the participation of all applicants’ parents. This committee will also comprise two parents of applicants to ensure transparency and fairness during the selection process.

Subsequent to the lottery draw, the school is mandated to prominently display the initial selection list on the notice board within the school premises, adhering to the prescribed guidelines. Furthermore, the list will be made available on the official school website for convenient access and transparency for all parties involved.
